Mussoorie, June 13 -- Heavy rainfall lashed several districts of Uttarakhand including Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Bageshwar, on Thursday, triggering a landslide in the Kund area of Rudraprayag that temporarily blocked traffic and forced authorities to divert pilgrim vehicles for over two hours, officials said. The landslide took place in the Kakragad area of Rudraprayag district, disrupting the route used by vehicles returning from Guptkashi. Superintendent of police Rudraprayag Akhshay Prahlad Konde said that only heavy vehicles and two-wheelers were allowed to pass intermittently on the Sonprayag-bound route from Augustmuni. Smaller vehicles were diverted through Banswara, Pasta Bend, and Lamgaudi Tiraaha near Guptkashi, he said. Amid ongoing rain, SP Konde conducted a detailed inspection from Rudraprayag district headquarters to Sonprayag to oversee traffic and pilgrim management. He instructed police officers to ensure safe passage for pilgrims and directed deployed personnel on the Kedarnath yatra route to maintain proper queue management and advise pilgrims to travel only after checking weather conditions. He also emphasised the importance of carrying adequate rain gear and warm clothing. Deputy superintendent of police, Guptkashi, Vikas Pundir, said police teams along the Phata-Sonprayag stretch were directed to coordinate closely with their counterparts in the Augustmuni area to regulate returning traffic. Station in-charges were personally monitoring diversions and traffic flow in their jurisdictions, he said. Despite the widespread rain in surrounding areas, the Kedarnath shrine itself remained dry on Thursday. However, temple priest Anand Shukla said that there was heavy rainfall along the trekking route from Gaurikund to Lincholi and cloud cover over Kedar Dham. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, issued an orange alert for Friday, predicting heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Bageshwar. A yellow alert was also issued for Champawat and Pithoragarh, forecasting intense rain spells, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 km/hour. Similar conditions are expected in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, it added....
