Heavy rain causes acute waterlogging; Ganga, Yamuna swell in 24 hours
PRAYAGRAJ, July 10 -- Heavy rainfall in the city on Wednesday morning disrupted the lives of residents as low-lying localities and roads witnessed acute waterlogging.
After an overcast sky, continuous rains for nearly two hours on Wednesday morning which started around 8am, gave a tough time to school going children as well as officer goers as acutely waterlogged main roads and bylanes forced commuters to wade through knee deep water.
Power outages, another outcome of heavy rains also affected the residents as it caused disruptions in water supply to some localities.
Some of the city localities grossly affected owing to heavy rainfall included Leader Road, Katju Road, Rambagh, Bai-Ka-Bagh, Rambhavan Chauraha, Mutthiganj, Gaughat, Naini, Kydganj, Katra, Dhoomanganj, etc.
Water entered some of the houses in low-lying Jafri Colony in densely populated Kareli locality.
Further, roads leading to Anandpuram, Devghat Jhalwa Colony in Rajrooppur were completely submerged. When the drain of Chhota Baghada, which was already in bad condition, overflowed, the kutcha roads were filled with water and traffic came to a halt. The situation had not become normal anywhere till noon.
Meanwhile, owing to heavy rainfall in different parts of the state, water level of both the Ganga and Yamuna has been rising continuously for the past two weeks. On Wednesday, the water level of the twin rivers recorded the highest rise this year in a 24-hour period.
Data made available by the Flood Control room on Wednesday revealed that water level of Ganga at Chhatnag recorded a maximum rise in 24-hour period this year of 106 cm between 8am on Tuesday and 8am on Wednesday. Further, the water level of Yamuna swelled by 94 cm in a 24-hour period at Naini.
On Wednesday morning Ganga at Chhatnag was flowing at 78.32 metres at 8am while the water level of Yamuna in Naini was measured at 77.42 metres.
According to executive engineer, Irrigation department, Prayagraj, the level of Ganga at Chhatnag on Wednesday morning between 8am and 12noon was rising at 4cm per hour while Yamuna in Naini was measured to be rising 6cm per hour.
In the past three days, records of the Flood Control Room revealed that over 2.5 lakh cusec water had been released from Kanpur Barrage alone. As per data made available by the control room, on Monday 63,968 cusec water was released while on Tuesday, 85,244 cusec water was released from Kanpur barrage.
