LUCKNOW, Dec. 5 -- If winter is here, can heaters be far behind? No, we're not talking about you! Even the lion, owl, Lion Tailed Macaque, and chimpanzee need them. At the Lucknow zoo, authorities have taken steps to keep inmates comfortable during inclement weather and have installed heaters for them, while snakes have got quilts, to keep them warm. "Change in temperature calls for additional measures for zoo animals and that has been put in place, till mercury stays low," said zoo director Aditi Sharma. "Diet changes have been started with more fruits for herbivores and multivitamins as needed. Also monitoring will be increased to check for illness," said Utkarsh Shukla, the zoo veterinarian. That is not all. The zoo is arranging wooden cots with stubble and mats to keep the animals warm, while mats on top of birds' enclosures and trees are being trimmed to let in some extra sunlight.
