LUCKNOW, Nov. 29 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has directed the state government to ensure permanent presence of police personnel in front of a liquor shop near Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) in Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar, to curb hooliganism and drinking in the open space. A division bench of Justice Shekhar B Saraf and Justice Brij Raj Singh passed the order on November 26 on a petition filed by Dinesh Yadav, local resident, and others. Petitioners raised the issue of opening the liquor shop within a 100-metre radius of RMLIMS. Senior advocate Gaurav Mehrotra argued that there was a law and order situation as people openly consumed liquor near the hospital. "If the allegation made by the petitioners is true, this is a concerning matter and the State is accordingly directed to ensure that consumption of liquor does not take place outside the liquor shop. Furthermore, the State should ensure permanent presence of police personnel in front of the said liquor shop," the court said, directing that the matter be listed for further hearing on December 10, 2025.
