HC stays proceedings against actor Salman Khan
JODHPUR, April 11 -- The Rajasthan high court has stayed further proceedings in a complaint pending before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC), Jaipur II, against Bollywood actor Salman Khan until the next date of hearing.
The order was passed by justice Anuroop Singhi on Thursday while hearing a writ petition filed by Khan challenging orders passed by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Rajasthan, on March 16 and by DCDRC, Jaipur II, on January 6.
The consumer complaint had been filed by advocate Yogendra Singh Badiyal alleging that advertisements of "Rajshree Pan Masala" published in newspapers were misleading, harmful to public health and in violation of regulatory norms. Khan was made a respondent in the complaint on the ground that he appeared as a brand ambassador in an advertisement related to the company's products.
Senior advocate GS Bapna, appearing for the actor, argued that Khan had only endorsed the company's "silver-coated elaichi" product and had never advertised or promoted its pan masala. The petition contended that the complaint against him was therefore frivolous and misconceived.
It was further argued that the interim order passed by the DCDRC on January 6 was never served on the actor, yet contempt proceedings were initiated on January 15 and bailable warrants were issued without recording a finding on service of the order. The High Court issued notice to the respondents and granted them four weeks to file their reply....
