PRAYAGRAJ, July 31 -- The Allahabad high court on Wednesday reserved its judgment on a revision petition filed by Abbas Ansari, who challenged the MP-MLA court order in Mau rejecting his plea for a stay on conviction in a 2022 hate speech case. Ansari, a former MLA from Mau and son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, had approached the high court against the July 5 order passed by the Additional Sessions Judge, MP-MLA court, which denied his request for a stay on conviction while his appeal remains pending. Justice Sameer Jain reserved the order after hearing arguments from both sides. Earlier, on May 31 this year, the MP-MLA court in Mau had convicted Abbas under IPC Sections 153-A (promoting enmity between groups) and 189 (threatening a public servant) for a controversial speech made during the 2022 assembly election campaign. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. The case was lodged after a video of his speech targeting a government official went viral on social media. Following his conviction, Abbas Ansari was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
