LUCKNOW, Sept. 3 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Tuesday reserved its order on a Uttar Pradesh government appeal challenging a single-judge decision that struck down six government orders (GOs) issued between 2010 and 2015. These GOs had introduced reservation in admissions to four state-run medical colleges in Ambedkar Nagar, Kannauj, Jalaun and Saharanpur, resulting in 79% seats being reserved. A division bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Manjive Shukla had earlier, on August 1, fixed the matter for September 2 (Tuesday) to allow senior counsel JN Mathur to argue on how the single-judge order was flawed in light of constitutional provisions and Supreme Court rulings cited in the case. During Tuesday's hearing, state counsel argued that implementing the single-judge order would affect the ongoing counselling process not only in the four colleges but also in other medical institutions. The petitioner's counsel opposed the submission, maintaining that the order was in accordance with the law governing reservation. The single-judge bench of Justice Pankaj Bhatia, in an order dated August 25, had directed the state's medical education department to conduct fresh admissions in the four colleges as per the Reservation Act, 2006, along with quotas for central and state government seats. The ruling came on a petition filed by NEET 2025 aspirant Sabra Ahamad, who challenged the GOs on the ground that they violated Section 4 of the 2006 Act and were contrary to law. While the petitioner sought quashing of the GOs, the state opposed the plea. MANOJ KUMAR SINGH...
