Bengaluru/Chennai, Dec. 5 -- Amid the ongoing tension in Tamil Nadu over the lighting of a religious lamp at Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai district, the Madras high court directed the local police to permit devotees to light the lamp on Thursday night and make adequate security arrangements. However, several people, including state BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, were detained when they attempted to light the lamp. In a hearing earlier in the day, justice GR Swaminathan warned the Madurai superintendent of police of "strict action" if the court's orders were not complied with. Justice Swaminathan also quashed the prohibitory notification issued on December 3, by the Madurai district collector under Section 144 CrPC (Section 163 BNSS) in the Thiruparakundram region, preventing the gathering of more than five persons at a time at any place in the area. The judge quashed the notification, observing that the same had been promulgated only to circumvent the implementation of his December 1 order. However, when devotees tried to go atop the hill to light the lamp, they were told in clear terms that they will not be permitted. As Nainar and others did not disperse, they were taken away in a police van. Police said the leaders have been lodged in a hall. "If anyone had to be aggrieved, it was the Dargah committee, and they were not the ones filing an appeal against the order of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court," said former BJP TN president K Annamalai. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the arrest of Nainar Nagenthran and devotees. "Does the doll chief minister's government consider itself to be above the judgments of the court?"...
