Ahmedabad, Nov. 7 -- The Gujarat high court on Thursday granted six-month interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram - who is serving a life sentence in a 2013 Gandhinagar rape case - on medical grounds, noting that the Rajasthan high court provided him similar relief in a separate 2013 rape case. A division bench of justices Ilesh J Vora and RT Vachhani said the relief is limited to medical treatment and his convictions and life sentences remain in force. Asaram has been serving a life term since April 2018 when a Jodhpur court convicted him for raping a minor at his Manai ashram in 2013. His lawyers said he suffers from heart disease, hypertension, hypothyroidism, anaemia, and gastrointestinal illness that require specialised care unavailable in Jodhpur Central Jail.
