LUCKNOW, Sept. 16 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directives for action in the case of Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University (SRMU), where students were admitted to law courses allegedly run without recognition from the Bar Council of India (BCI). The plea also sought directives for a judicial inquiry into the issue by a retired judge of the high court. A division bench comprising justice Rajan Roy and justice Manjive Shukla passed the order on September 12 in response to the PIL filed by Ashish Kumar Singh. Protests erupted at the SRMU in Barabanki on September 1 after student groups, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), alleged irregularities in its law courses. Several students and ABVP workers were injured in a police lathicharge during the agitation. The court said that after taking into consideration the order of the Bar Council of India (dated 3.9.2025), according to which the provisional approval granted to the university earlier has been extended for a period of one year and that the other PIL (no. 958 of 2025) is already pending on the subject, "...we see no reason to entertain another PIL for the same cause," the court observed disposing of the plea....
