HC asks Bareilly SSP to trace accused in conversion case
Meerut, Sept. 4 -- The Allahabad High Court, in an order passed on Tuesday, summoned Bareilly SSP Anurag Arya on September 8 in connection with the disappearance of Mahmood Beg, an accused in a religious conversion case. The court has also directed police to trace Beg and produce him before it.
The order came on a habeas corpus petition filed by Beg's wife, Parveen Akhtar, who alleged that plain-clothed policemen picked up her husband on August 20 and that he has been missing since then. She further expressed fear that the police might stage an encounter. Acting on the plea, a bench of Justice Jafeer Ahmed and Justice Salil Kumar Rai sought a clear explanation from the police.
The case dates back to a recent disclosure by SP (South) Anshika Verma, who revealed that two Hindu families had been converted to Islam. Following the revelation, alleged mastermind Abdul Majeed and three others were sent to jail, while Beg, a resident of Rahpura Chaudhary under Izzatnagar police station, was declared wanted.
Efforts are on to trace Beg, SSP Arya said and assured full compliance with the high court's order....
