LUCKNOW, April 7 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has acquitted a man who spent 11 years in jail in connection with the rape of a 14-year-old girl. The case dates back to 2010. The court observed that the police had committed a "serious lapse" by failing to match the semen found on the victim to the accused. A division bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Brij Raj Singh on April 3 set aside the 2018 Faizabad trial court judgment that had sentenced Nirmal Kumar to rigorous life imprisonment and had imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 under Section 376 IPC. "Considering the standard of proof in criminal matters, one cannot, on mere hunch or suspicion, convict a person and hold him guilty of such offence," the bench observed as it ordered his immediate release....
