Haridwar hospital sealed after death of 2 pregnant women
Haridwar, Aug. 5 -- A maternity hospital in Roorkee's Bahadurabad area was sealed by the police on Monday following the deaths of two pregnant women, allegedly due to medical negligence, officials aware of the matter said. Senior police officers confirmed that separate cases have been registered against the staff of Maa Ganga Maternity and Eye Care Hospital under relevant sections of the law.
According to police, both women were admitted to the hospital on August 3 for childbirth. However, both died shortly after their deliveries. The incidents sparked outrage among family members and locals, leading to a tense situation at the hospital on Sunday night.
Superintendent police (SP) (rural) Shekhar Chandra Suyal said, "Based on two separate complaints, we have registered cases under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) -which pertains to causing death by negligence - against the doctors and medical staff of Maa Ganga Maternity and Eye Care Hospital. A detailed investigation has been initiated. Meanwhile, the hospital has been sealed by Bahadrabad police."
Police said the first incident involved Khushbu, wife of Monty Kumar, a resident of Narsain Khurd, Tehsil Roorkee. She was admitted to the hospital for delivery on August 3. On the same day, Meenakshi Devi (30), wife of Tinu Ram from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was also admitted for delivery.
He said Meenakshi reportedly delivered her baby around midnight. Initially, the mother and child were declared stable by the attending doctors. However, by Sunday evening, doctors informed the family about her anaemic condition and the need for a blood transfusion. Soon after, her health deteriorated, and she passed away despite the intervention, he said.
He said in a similar case, Khushbu also reportedly underwent a successful delivery but later developed complications. She too succumbed to her condition by Sunday evening. In both cases, the newborns were safely handed over to the families, he said.
Tensions flared as family members alleged that both women died due to negligence on the part of the hospital staff, who they claimed failed to provide timely medical care and observation. "The situation escalated when, after the deaths, the hospital's doctors and management reportedly fled the premises, leaving the families without answers," the SP said.
The news of the deaths quickly spread in the area, drawing large crowds of agitated relatives, villagers, and local residents who gathered at the hospital demanding accountability. Protesters raised slogans against the hospital management, and the situation remained tense until late Sunday night.
Police arrived at the scene and managed to control the situation by assuring the aggrieved families of strict legal action....
