Haridwar farmers warn of stir if pending sugarcane dues aren't cleared by Oct 20
Haridwar, Oct. 19 -- Aggrieved by delays in the payment of sugarcane dues, farmers have warned of launching a massive agitation if their pending payments are not cleared by Deepawali, farmer union representatives said on Saturday.
Under the aegis of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rod), farmers said sugar mills must ensure the release of all pending dues before the festival.
"It's the festive season of Deepawali, but many farmers are still waiting for their dues to be credited by sugar mills, pending for months. Without money, how will farmers celebrate? We will wait till October 20, after which we will begin our agitation, which may include blocking roads and railway tracks in the Roorkee-Haridwar region," said BKU (Tikait) president Padam Singh Rod. He added that their demands have been submitted to the joint magistrate of Roorkee and include opposition to smart electronic metres and a waiver on power bills used for irrigation purposes.
Joint magistrate assured the farmers delegation he will apprise to state government and respective concerned department about their demands.
Notably, another farmers' union, Uttarakhand Kisan Morcha, recently staged a month-long sit-in at the Roorkee tehsil premises, demanding immediate payment of sugarcane dues from the Iqbalpur sugar mill....
