New Delhi, Feb. 19 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a halt on any further exhumation of bodies of tribal Christians in Chhattisgarh villages after a petition alleged that some unidentified people along with police are digging up graves where Christians have been buried and relocating them to far away graveyards.
Issuing notice on a petition filed by Chhattisgarh Association for Justice and Equality and other social activists in the state, a bench of justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria said, "In the meantime, no further exhumation of buried bodies shall be undertaken."
The court sought the response of the state government on the plea which further alleged that Christian tribal families were not being allowed to bury their dead in the graveyards situated within their village boundaries and sent to cemeteries situated within a distance of 50 kilometres. The matter has been kept for hearing after four weeks.
The petition was argued by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves along with advocate Satya Mitra who read out statements of persons in 11 cases....
