Guv: Optimal utilisation of research key for dev
Jhansi, Aug. 28 -- Extensive work in the fields of research, development and the use of technology is essential to achieving the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, said Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel. She was presiding over the 30th annual convocation of Bundelkhand University held in Jhansi on Wednesday.
"We are still lagging behind in the field of research and development, which needs enhancement," she noted. Expressing concern over the current academic situation, the Governor stressed the need for methodical work and regular student attendance. She stated that any student with less than 75% attendance would not be allowed to sit for semester examinations and mentioned that a letter to this effect had been issued to all universities across the state.
Patel further observed that research outcomes often remain confined to students or their mentors when they should be shared with relevant stakeholders to ensure public benefit. She encouraged students to adopt the latest technology and advised them to collect their degrees and mark sheets through DigiLocker instead of demanding hard copies from the university.
She also urged universities and students to campaign against social evils like dowry, alcoholism, and begging. The Governor encouraged students to take a pledge against accepting dowry and advised female students to choose life partners who oppose dowry and intoxication. She emphasized the need for students to engage with rural communities to bring about meaningful change.
On the occasion, DRDO Director General (PC and SI) Dr Chandrika Kaushik, stated that the country's future will be technology-driven and emphasised the importance of students engaging in purposeful research. She said that technology must be used responsibly, with values and ethics, so that it benefits society as a whole.
Dr Kaushik also advised students not to fear failure and to use every opportunity for growth. She highlighted that although 50% of degree holders are women, their participation in the workforce drops to 15-20%.
Earlier, in his welcome address, vice chancellor Prof Mukesh Pandey stated that the university was celebrating its 30th convocation, which also marked its golden jubilee. He informed the gathering that 35,009 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, along with 67 PhDs, were being awarded. In total, 34 Chancellor's Medals and 45 sponsored medals were distributed by the Governor.
