LUCKNOW, April 2 -- A 29-year-old Government Railway Police (GRP) constable lost both his legs after being run over by a train while trying to stop a theft suspect fleeing custody at Gonda railway station shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
The injured constable, Akash Singh, fell into the gap between the platform and the moving Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express, officials said on Wednesday.
Despite suffering grievous injuries, he managed to overpower the suspect, Sunil Kumar, 35, and held him until other policemen reached the spot. According to GRP officials, a scuffle broke out between a passenger and Sunil on Platform No. 1 around 11:30 pm on Tuesday, with the former accusing Sunil of stealing cash from his pocket. Officials said one of the constable's legs was completely severed, while the other was crushed beyond repair.
Policemen from the nearby GRP post rushed to the spot after hearing his screams, got the train stopped and pulled him out. The suspect, who was also injured, was taken into custody.
