Govt to launch night stays, safaris in Surai range
Haldwani, Oct. 28 -- The state forest department will introduce night stay and safari services in the Surai range of Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar district from November 1, in order to promote eco-tourism in the Corbett landscape, officials in the know said on Monday.
Himanshu Bagri, the divisional forest officer (DFO) for the Terai East Forest Division, said, "This is the first time we are introducing night stays in the Surai range. This initiative will significantly enhance tourism activities in this part of the Terai region, which is known for its rich biodiversity but has remained largely untouched by commercial tourism."
Surai range, located near the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve and forming part of its buffer zone, is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including tigers, elephants, bears, hog deer, and the rare Russell's viper.
Despite its ecological significance, the area has largely remained underexplored by tourists until now, said Bagri.
The department planning to set up three tent houses and one eco-hut for tourists, he said, adding that an online booking portal has also been launched to streamline reservations.
"Many tourists who are unable to visit the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve opt for safaris in the Surai range. Currently, around 40-50 tourists visit the area for day safaris. However, the lack of accommodation facilities has been a hindrance. By introducing night stays, we are not only catering to this demand but also giving a much-needed boost to the local economy," said Bagri.
The initiative is also seen as a strategic move to enhance the state's tourism revenue while fostering environmental conservation. The generated revenue will be reinvested into green activities, further promoting sustainability in the region, officials said.
Additionally, local communities are expected to benefit through increased employment opportunities in hospitality, guiding services, and related sectors, they added.
"This initiative will not only boost the state's revenue but also create employment for locals, promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit both people and the environment," Bagri added....
