Chennai, Nov. 20 -- Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Wednesday accused the BJP-led Union government of rejecting Metro projects for Madurai and Coimbatore as an act of "revenge" against the people of the state. His attack came hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Coimbatore to inaugurate the South India Natural Farming Summit 2025. "The Union BJP government has denied Metro Rail for 'Temple City' Madurai and for 'South India's Manchester', Coimbatore, on flimsy grounds. A government exists to serve people without bias. Yet the Union BJP treats Tamil Nadu's democratic choice as a reason to take revenge. Pushing such a political custom, in which BJP ruled states get Metros for smaller Tier II cities while opposition ruled States are deprived, is a disgraceful approach," he said on X. The Union housing and urban affairs ministry recently returned the state's detailed project reports for the two tier-II cities. The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) will protest condemning the decision in Coimbatore on November 20 and in Madurai on November 21. Coimbatore south MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said, "The Centre returned the DPRs based on the 2017 Metro Policy, which uses 2011 city-proper population. Coimbatore's figure fell below the 2 million threshold. TN has received Rs.1.5 lakh crore in rail funds under NDA-hardly the sign of any anti-Tamil Nadu agenda."...
