mussorie, Nov. 19 -- In response to a series of attacks in Pauri district, the Forest Department has deployed shooters and installed cages in Pokhara block after receiving shoot-at-sight permission for a man-eating leopard. The action follows instructions issued by state cabinet minister and Chaubattakhal MLA Satpal Maharaj, who urged authorities to take steps to save residents. The minister said the measure became necessary after repeated incidents involving leopard attacks in his constituency. These include the killing of Rani Devi, a resident of Bagrigad in Pokhara block on November 13, followed by serious injuries to Prabha Devi of Ghandiyal village the next day in another leopard attack. "After the shoot-at-sight permission was granted, cages have been placed and shooters deployed in the affected areas since Monday. The man-eating leopard will soon be eliminated, and people will be free from it," Maharaj said. The minister also expressed concern over another wildlife attack reported on Monday morning in Jivai village of Bironkhal block, where Laxmi Devi, wife of Jaipal, was seriously injured in a bear attack. He directed forest officials to strengthen safety measures in vulnerable villages and take prompt action to prevent further incidents. Assuring support to all families affected by wildlife attacks, Maharaj instructed forest officials to provide immediate compensation to victims' families.
