LUCKNOW, Sept. 1 -- Gorakhpur Lions came back from a sticky spot to clinch their fifth win at the 2025 UPT20 League on Sunday, defeating Kanpur Superstars in a tense match of the season, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here. In what turned out to be the first match of the season that went into a Super Over, Gorakhpur managed to pull off a proverbial rabbit out of the hat thanks to Prince Yadav's fine all-round showing. After having top-scored for his side, Yadav's three-wicket haul then stalled the Kanpur chase as they looked to be headed on their way to an unexpected win. Gorakhpur then bowled Kanpur out for a mere one run in the Super Over that followed before chasing down the target off the second ball. When Sameer Rizvi was at the crease the target of 141 looked to be headed towards a cakewalk for Kanpur. As has been his style, Rizvi took a few deliveries to get going but once he did, there was no stopping him. Having come out to bat at 8 for two in the second over, Rizvi played out five dots from Vasu Vats' second over and then chipped a single off the final ball. Another four dots followed off Teerath Singh's next, leading to a bit of a stir in the Kanpur dugout as Rizvi crawled to two from his 11 balls. It was mayhem after that. A four and six ended that Teerath over and that was followed by Rizvi smashing two sixes and two fours off Abdul Rehman in the next over. With the momentum firmly back in his favour, Rizvi - and Adarsh Singh at the other end - combined to take 15 and 12 from the next two overs. Kanpur's problems began when the third wicket partnership that raised 91 runs in a mere 49 balls was broken by an innocuous Teerath delivery. It was a short one going down the leg-side which Adarsh only managed to glove to the keeper. That broke the momentum and only 26 runs came from the following 20 balls despite the presence of Rizvi at the crease.
