GORAKHPUR, Jan. 10 -- A notorious criminal was arrested following an encounter in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday near village Ekana, close to the Gorakhpur Link Expressway under the Belghat police station area of Gorakhpur district. At least two police personnel, including a sub-inspector and a constable, sustained injuries during the operation. According to police officials, the incident occurred when a patrol team attempted to stop a suspicious motorcycle rider for routine checking. Instead of complying, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police team and tried to flee. In retaliation, the police acted in self-defence and managed to overpower and arrest him after a brief exchange of gunfire. Station house officer (SHO) of Belghat, Sanjeev Kumar, said that illegal weapons, including a country-made pistol and live cartridges, were recovered from the accused, along with a motorcycle and a mobile phone. The accused has been identified as Rajmani Yadav. He sustained a bullet injury in his left leg during the encounter and was later sent for medical examination. Circle officer (CO) Khajni, Shilpi Kumari, stated, "The accused has a criminal history and was carrying illegal weapons. When the police team tried to stop him, he opened fire. In the retaliatory action by the police, he was arrested. Two police personnel sustained minor injuries and are out of danger." The injured sub-inspector, Abhishek Kumar Yadav, and constable, Rakesh Singh, were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were given first aid. Their condition is reported to be stable. Police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 109(1), 121(2), 132, and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Arms Act and other relevant sections.
