GORAKHPUR, May 26 -- Following serious concerns raised by the Allahabad high court over the alleged deplorable conditions at a government-run childcare centre in Gorakhpur, a three-member probe committee conducted a spot inspection on Saturday evening. The team interacted with children, reviewed facilities and is expected to submit its report to the state government by Monday. Food samples were collected to evaluate nutritional content and quality, and documentation was reviewed for regulatory compliance. ADM (City) Anjani Kumar, who accompanied the team, said the management of the centre was inspected and found to be in "appropriate order." District probation officer Samar Bahadur Saroj also claimed the team was satisfied with the conditions and found nothing objectionable. Despite these official claims, the inspection was triggered by a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) taken up by a division bench of the Allahabad HC. On Friday, the court issued notices to the secretary of the Women and child welfare department and the director of the child welfare department, seeking a detailed explanation following a media report published on May 18. The PIL followed a surprise inspection conducted on May 17 by Manoj Tiwari, secretary of the district legal services authority (Deoria). In his report, he flagged serious concerns, including overcrowding-with 257 children from Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Deoria housed in a facility meant for just 100. He also noted that 35 children were living in a single room, and the premises were in an unhygienic condition. Officials have stated that further monitoring and evaluation will be carried out to ensure the centre adheres to government-mandated standards, safeguarding children's rights and ensuring proper care, hygiene and nutrition....
