PRAYAGRAJ, July 9 -- A teenage girl from a Scheduled Caste community was harassed by a married man of her own village in Pratapgarh district, while she was returning home from a shop. When her family members protested, they were threatened and chased away. As they attempted to report the incident to the police, the accused and his associates launched a violent attack, leaving six people injured late on Sunday evening. One elderly man, critically hurt in the assault, was referred to Prayagraj for advanced treatment, police said. Based on a complaint filed by the girl's mother, police registered an FIR of attempted murder and assault under the SC/ST Act against 12 named individuals and six unidentified assailants. Two of the accused have been arrested and sent to jail, police added. The incident took place in Sundarpur village, under Kohandaur police station limits. On Sunday evening, the teenage girl was returning home when Akash Mishra, a married man from the same village, began harassing her. When the girl raised an alarm, her family rushed to her aid, prompting the accused to flee after issuing threats. UP Police personnel from the Dial 112 emergency response unit arrived soon after but could not locate the accused. Later that evening, as the girl's parents and a few others headed to the police station to file a formal complaint, they were allegedly ambushed en route by Akash Mishra and a group of nearly 18 people. The girl's mother, Kamla Saroj, and other family members - Amit, Neeraj, Suraj, Vishal, and 70-year-old Babulal Saroj - sustained serious injuries in the attack. All were initially taken to the Community Health Centre in Kohandaur. Due to the severity of his injuries, Babulal was referred to the medical college and then to a hospital in Prayagraj.
