LUCKNOW, Dec. 10 -- Uttar Pradesh's power sector achieved a milestone on Tuesday as Unit-2 (660 MW) of the 1,980 MW super-critical Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Kanpur began commercial operation, bringing the plant's total operational capacity to 1,320 MW. Energy minister AK Sharma said the development is a step toward energy self-reliance, noting that Uttar Pradesh has added 5,280 MW of thermal generation in recent years, nearly doubling its power availability. "The increased capacity will support industrial expansion and help ensure a stable, high-quality power supply for consumers," he added. The project, a joint venture between Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL) and Nyvelli Lignite Corporation (NLC) India Limited, strengthens the state's generation capacity.
