Jaipur, Aug. 15 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday accused the BJP government of deliberately blocking student union elections, saying it is an attempt to keep them politically unaware and prevent new leadership from emerging. In a post on X, Gehlot said the state government's recent statement in the high court, that holding student union elections this year was not possible, made this intention clear. Calling the move "highly condemnable and unfortunate," he noted that leaders from Congress, BJP, and other parties have risen from student politics, and questioned why it is being denied to them. Gehlot further asked how long the elections would be postponed under the pretext of the National Education Policy (NEP) and why the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad remained silent. He urged all student organizations, regardless of political affiliation, to voice their concerns. BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj, reacting to Gehlot's remarks, said those who had once stopped student union elections are now advocating for their revival after losing power.
