LUCKNOW, Nov. 25 -- Young pacer Garima Yadav took four wickets to help Uttar Pradesh off to a flying start in the Women's Under-23 T20 Trophy, notching up a five-wicket win over strong Karnataka in their Elite Group C encounter, at the Gurugram Cricket Ground in Haryana on Monday. Kanpur's Garima claimed 4/16 as Uttar Pradesh got Karnataka out for paltry 77 in 19.4 overs while fielding first after winning the toss. Uttar Pradesh too after making a poor start, somehow reached home in 18 overs, losing five wickets. Besides Garima, four other bowlers Archana Devi, Sandhya Chhetri, Khushi Tyagi and Bhumi Singh shared four wickets between them as Karnataka batters never got the going easy and kept losing wickets on regular intervals after losing keeper-opener Rachitha Hatwar (7) in the very third over. Mithali Vinod (18, 38b, 2x4) and Amita D'Souza (11*, 10b, 1x4) were the two batters, who could cross the double-figure mark. In reply, Uttar Pradesh too had a poor start as they lost skipper Varnika (5) in the second over. Though Tripti Singh (31, 42b, 2x4) and Sampada Dixit (13, 18b, 1x4) added 27 runs for the second wicket, their overconfident shots soon saw the side struggling at 4/44 in the 10th over. A 33-run fifth wicket partnership between Tripti and Bhumsi Singh (17*, 26b, 1x4) helped Uttar Pradesh stay on course of winning before Nishi Kashyap (1) hitting the winning shot. BG Tejashwini (2/15) and Deeksha J (2/13) were the most successful bowlers for Karnataka. Now, Uttar Pradesh play their next game against Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
