Ganga rising in Varanasi, officials step up flood preparations
VARANASI, Aug. 1 -- With the Ganga river's water level rising to 69.36 metres in Varanasi and the upward trend continuing, several low-lying localities have been inundated and all ghats are now submerged. The water level of the Varuna river is also increasing due to the reverse flow from the Ganga.
District magistrate Satyendra Kumar inspected the flood affected areas and reviewed the arrangements at relief camps at Primary School Salarpur.
The Naib Tehsildar briefed him on the impacted areas and said arrangements are being made to shelter displaced families at Vidya Vihar Inter College.
He directed municipal corporation officials to ensure cleanliness, anti-larva measures, fogging, and lime spraying in waterlogged areas. He also instructed the SDM Sadar to ensure students' studies are not disrupted.
Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam chaired a meeting on the Ganga and Varuna flood situation in Varanasi, stressing the need for robust relief and rescue preparations in affected low-lying areas.
The divisional commissioner directed officials to activate loud hailers and sirens for emergencies, keep the flood control number active with proper record-keeping, and monitor Ganga's water level regularly. He also stressed issuing frequent flood bulletins and instructed rural officials to ensure proper arrangements for animal fodder, straw, and water.
All flood relief camps in vulnerable urban areas like Nagwan, Assi Ghat, Samneghat, Maruti Nagar, and rural areas like Konia, Saraiya, and Salarpur must be fully repaired and made operational....
