Ganga, Yamuna water levels begin to rise again, cross 80-metre mark
PRAYAGRAJ, July 29 -- Water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna have started to rise once again from Sunday night onwards after witnessing decline for the past eight days. Both the rivers once again crossed the 80-metre mark on Monday afternoon with Ganga witnessing rise of 42 cm in just four hours between 8am and 12noon and was measured to be flowing at 80.69 metres in Phaphamau while Yamuna registered a rise of 18 cm in the four-hour period and was recorded flowing at 80.60 metres in Naini at 12noon.
According to ADM (finance and revenue) Vinita Singh, who is also nodal officer of Flood Relief Operations, the flood water had started rising once again, after last Sunday, when it breached the 83-metre mark.
"Presently, over 220 residents of 43 families, who had shifted to Flood Relief Camps in city limits a week before, had returned to their homes. However, with the water level of both the rivers rising once again and crossing 80-metre mark on Monday, the Flood Control teams posted at all 88 flood outposts besides 47 villages which had been marked as sensitive, have been put on alert," she added.
Executive engineer of Irrigation department, Prayagraj RK Singh, said that water level of both the rivers had started to rise once again owing to heavy rainfall in different parts of the state.
"Heavy rainfall in catchment areas of Ganga, including some neighboruing states, was also resulting in rise in level of the Ganga. Every year floods occur in the month of August after a decline in water level like a week ago. With a healthy monsoon expected this year as per Meteorological department, water level of Ganga and Yamuna is expected to breach the warning level of 83.73 metres this year, if not the danger mark of 84.73 metres," he added.In the past two days, significant quantities of water having been released from Haridwar, Narora and Kanpur Barrage has also cast its effect on the rise in water level of both the rivers.Records revealed, from Haridwar 81,169 cusec water was released on Sunday at 8am while 64,343 cusec water was released on Monday morning.
Similarly, from Narora Barrage, 40,450 cusec water was released on Sunday morning and 42,160 cusec water was released on Monday morning. From Ganga barrage in Kanpur, 62.977 cusec water was released on Sunday as well as Monday morning respectively. According to flood control room data, between 4 pm Sunday and 4 pm Monday, the Ganga in Phaphamau rose at 5.12 cm per hour, while the Yamuna in Naini swelled by 4.58 cm per hour....
