Ganga, Yamuna recede further
Prayagraj, Aug. 9 -- The Ganga and Yamuna continued their receding trend, falling by 1.5 to 2 metres in the past 24 hours and flowing well below danger levels by 4pm on Friday.
According to the Irrigation Department's flood control unit, the rivers have been steadily declining for three days. By Friday evening, the Yamuna was at 82.51 metres (Naini) and the Ganga at 81.96 metres (Phaphamau) and 81.76 metres (Chhatnag).
With water levels dropping, evacuees began returning from relief camps.
The number fell from 9,368 on Wednesday to 6,588 by Friday. Residents also started cleaning homes and shops, while 73 boats remained deployed for support.Twenty-four medical teams have been deployed across flood relief camps in Varanasi, where over 4,599 displaced residents are currently sheltered. District magistrate Satyendra Kumar directed health officials to ensure round-the-clock medical support in affected areas.
CMO Dr Sandeep Chaudhary said 572 patients have been treated so far, while 2,782 ORS packets and over 35,000 chlorine tablets have been distributed to prevent water-borne diseases. Dr Piyush Rai has been appointed nodal officer, while ASHA workers are conducting door-to-door screenings.
