LUCKNOW, Sept. 8 -- The main accused in the gang-rape and murder of a woman in Sushant Golf City was arrested in a police encounter late Saturday night, a week after the crime. The victim's body, recovered beside railway tracks last Monday, bore serious injuries, including sexual assault marks. Police said Anuj Rawat, injured in the encounter on Kisan Path, was admitted to KGMU trauma centre. His accomplice, Deshraj Rawat, escaped. A bike and a pistol were recovered from the site. Anuj and Deshraj allegedly lured the woman under the pretext of drinking alcohol, raped her, and murdered her before dumping the body to stage an accident, as per the police. Postmortem report confirmed serious injuries, including attacks with a sharp object. CCTV footage helped police identify the duo, prompting four teams under ACP Gosaiganj to track them. Raids are ongoing for Deshraj. The accused reportedly confessed during interrogation, admitting knowledge of the victim and the sequence of events leading to her murder.
