Lucknow, Sept. 14 -- A gang that lured passengers with cheap taxi rides and then robbed them at deserted locations has been busted by Malihabad police. Three accused, including a woman, were arrested, and a firearm, ammunition, cash and the vehicle used in the crime were recovered. The case surfaced on September 1 when Geeta Kanojia, a school teacher, was waiting for transport at Dubagga crossing. A white Ertiga stopped and offered her a ride towards Hardoi for just Rs.50. After a short distance, the two men and the woman in the car allegedly assaulted her and snatched her mangalsutra, earrings, two gold chains and Rs.12,000 in cash before pushing her out near Saravan village. During interrogation, the prime accused Prem Kumar Verma, 56, revealed the gang's modus operandi. They would rent a car daily, pose as taxi drivers offering cheap fares, and once a passenger boarded, they would drive to an isolated stretch to rob them. The stolen ornaments were sold for Rs.20,000 and the money was divided among the three. A case has been registered under sections 309(6)/317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
