Gang making fake SIMs busted in Varanasi, 4 members arrested
VARANASI, Aug. 17 -- Four members of a gang, who were allegedly making and selling fake SIM cards, were arrested in Varanasi, on Saturday. Those arrested were identified as Sunil Yadav (28), a resident of Azamgarh, Shubham Agrahari alias Gopal (27), Nayaz Ahmed (47) and Arun Tripathi ( 34), all three residents of different localities of Varanasi, police said.
The arrests were made from Nati Imali area by a joint team of Varanasi Cyber Cell Team and Lalpur Pandeypur Police Station, a police officer said. 71 sims, including 60 non-activated and 11 activated, a biometric machine, four android mobile phones and Rs 18,490 were recovered from their possession, said the officer.
An FIR under sections 318(2) (cheating) and 111 (unlawful activities) of BNS and 66C IT Act was registered in Lalpur Pandeypur Police Station and an investigation has begun, said deputy commissioner of police, crime, Sarvanan T, adding that a police team under supervision of assistant commissioner of police, Cyber Crime, Vidush Saxena, had been deployed to identify and arrest the accused.
The police had received information about the involvement of a point of sale (POS) agent in the gang selling fake SIMs. The police team took action in which a POS agent who activated fake SIMs and three other members who supplied SIMs were arrested near Nati Imli. Along with this, the telecom company was informed to cancel the licence of the POS agent, said the DCP crime.
The criminals used to get double KYC (E KYC and D KYC) done of the gullible people who came to get SIM or for porting a SIM. They used to make a fake SIM in the name of the customer, and thereafter that SIM was sent to cyber criminals in Delhi and other states through courier or bus, added the officer. HTC...
