Game drawn, UP now face real test against Baroda in Ranji Trophy from November 1
India, Oct. 29 -- LUCKNOW With six points from two matches, Uttar Pradesh, who stand fourth in Group A, behind Vidarbha (10 pts), Jharkhand (8 pts) and Baroda (7 pts), will face the first real test in their maiden away match against Baroda from November 1 in Vadodara.
Perhaps, it's a slightly better show but not satisfactory for former champions Uttar Pradesh in the new season of Ranji Trophy so far. In the last season, the side couldn't even manage three points in the first three matches against Bengal, Haryana and Punjab on the basis of the first innings lead before losing to Kerala by an innings and 17 runs.
In the remaining three matches of that season, Uttar Pradesh could win just one match and that too against lowly Bihar by an innings and 119 runs, besides splitting points with Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh before ending the season with a sixth-place finish with just 14 points in eight-team Group C.
They managed three points in a rain-truncated four-day encounter in an Elite Group A tie against Odisha on Tuesday in Kanpur. The lead was possible on the basis of the 166-run first innings lead after declaring their first at 409/6 in reply to Odisha's first innings total of 243. Uttar Pradesh also had three points from the opening match of the season against Andhra at the same venue in the second week of this month.
In fact, the chance of a result almost looked bleak on the final day of the match on Tuesday as the day's proceedings got delayed by 45 minutes, and thereafter, rain interruptions forced an early tea break. Bad light kept haunting and then the umpires called off the match.
Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 380/6, Uttar Pradesh went on to declare their first innings at 409/6 in 130 overs. Both overnight batters, Vipraj Nigam and Shivam Mavi, remained unbeaten. While Nigam scored a 28-ball 31 with the help of four boundaries and a six, Mavi scored 12 in six balls with the help of a six. Pacer Sambit Baral remained most effective for Odisha with 3/52, whereas Badal Biswal and Sumit Sharma shared two wickets between them.
Though Uttar Pradesh bowlers, especially Team India discard Shivam Mavi took two quick wickets in his successive overs by removing Aashirwad Swain (23, 30b, 3x4) and Sandeep Pattnaik (5), it didn't make much of a difference and Odisha scored 151/3 in 44 overs before the bad light stopped play. Other pacer Kunal Tyagi also scalped skipper Subhranshu Senapati (11).
Opener Swastik Samal (71, 113, 8x4, 1x6) and Govind Poddar (38, 72b, 5x4) added an unbeaten 72 runs for the fourth wicket....
