KANPUR, Nov. 5 -- The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Akhilesh Dubey land-grabbing and extortion network was constituted in March earlier this year following a letter from Ashok Rawat, the BJP MP from Misrikh, to the Kanpur police commissioner. Rawat had flagged what he described as an organised syndicate involved in land-grabbing, extortion, and filing of false cases, allegedly with the support of certain police and administrative officials. The MP's intervention came after multiple complaints reached him, including one from businessman Ashish Shukla -- his childhood acquaintance -- who alleged that 5,213 square metres of land in Kidwai Nagar had been illegally occupied. Acting on the letter, the police formed an SIT headed by the DCP (crime) and urged the public to come forward with complaints related to the racket. Over the following weeks, 54 complaints were filed, and several FIRs were registered against Dubey and his associates. Dubey was arrested in August. As the SIT delved into his alleged network within the police department, it summoned three deputy superintendents of police -- Rishikant Shukla, Santosh Singh and Vikas Pandey -- to explain their financial dealings. On Monday, Rishikant Shukla was suspended after a separate vigilance probe found he had amassed property worth nearly Rs.100 crore through alleged collusion. The SIT continues to examine the roles of the two other officers who have yet to appear. Six other policemen -- inspectors Manvendra Singh, Neeraj Ojha, Aman Singh, Ashish Kumar Dwivedi, and sub-inspectors Adesh Kumar Yadav and Sanoj Patel -- were earlier suspended for aiding land-grab cases and suppressing complaints. Inspector Sabhajeet Mishra was arrested, while two Kanpur Development Authority employees, ML Solanki and Kashyap Kant Dubey, are also under investigation....
