Four robbery suspects held in two encounters
Meerut, Dec. 17 -- Four suspects in a robbery case were caught after two police encounters in the Shergarh area of Bareilly on Monday, police said. All four sustained bullet injuries to their legs. A police constable was also injured in the exchange of fire.
According to police officials, the four men were involved in the December 1 daylight robbery of jeweller Subhash Rastogi, a resident of the Thakurdwara locality in Kasba Shahi. Rastogi was looted on the Shahi-Shergarh Road when he was travelling.
Police said around 11 am, they received a tip-off that the four suspects on two motorcycles were near the Pipoli canal embankment on Rampura Road. When the police team reached the spot and attempted to cordon off the area, the suspects allegedly opened fire. The police retaliated, during which two of the accused were shot in the legs and apprehended. The remaining two suspects managed to flee.
During the encounter, constable Ankit Kumar was injured after a bullet grazed his hand. He was taken for medical treatment and is reported to be out of danger.
During interrogation, the two apprehended identified themselves as Girish Pal alias Guddu from Jungbazpur village in the Sirauli area and Lalta Prasad alias Nannaku from Dunka village under Shahi police station.
Both confessed to the robbery and were said to have multiple criminal cases registered against them in Bareilly district and neighbouring Badaun.Following the escape of the remaining two suspects, police formed three teams and launched a search operation across the area.
Around 5 pm, the two absconding accused were traced near the bridge over the Kichha river in Panbadiya village. Another encounter took place during which both suspects were shot in the legs and arrested.
Gold and silver jewellery, country-made pistols and cartridges were recovered from all four, who were admitted to a hospital for treatment....
