MEERUT, Dec. 21 -- Four members of a family, including a couple and their 15-year-old son, were killed after a speeding truck rammed into their motorcycle from the opposite direction and ran them over on the Agra-Moradabad highway in Sambhal district on Friday evening, police said. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the bereaved kin and directed officials to expedite relief measures. He also instructed that the injured be provided proper medical treatment. The accident occurred around 8 pm near Khajra village under the Bahjoi Kotwali police station area. The truck, laden with chikoos and coming from Babrala town, collided head-on with a motorcycle carrying four people who were heading towards the Bahjoi area of Sambhal. None of the victims was wearing a helmet, police said. After the collision, the truck veered off the road and crashed into a roadside tree, leaving the vehicle mangled and trapping the driver and cleaner inside the cabin. Police rushed to the spot and took the four injured people travelling on the motorcycle to the Bahjoi community health centre (CHC), where doctors declared them dead. Inspector Sant Kumar identified the deceased as Suresh Singh, 35, his wife Vimlesh, 30, their son Pratik, 15, and Sanjay, 40, also a family member -- all residents of Kamalpur village in the Bahjoi police station area. Suresh Singh was the son of Om Prakash, a ration dealer, and the family was returning to their village, police said. District magistrate Rajender Pensiya visited the accident site, while chief medical officer Dr Tarun Pathak reached the CHC. After nearly two hours, the injured truck driver, Laxman, 26, and cleaner Santosh were pulled out of the cabin and rushed to the CHC. They were later referred to the district hospital.
