Four killed as rain continues to batter state, 121 roads blocked
Mussoorie/Nainital, July 22 -- Widespread moderate to heavy monsoon rainfall battered all 13 districts of Uttarakhand over the past 24 hours, resulting in landslides, road blockages, and a series of tragic accidents that left four people dead and eight others injured. Authorities have intensified rescue efforts and damage control measures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the state.
In Dehradun, a motorcycle carrying five Kanwar pilgrims skidded on the slippery road near the Bhaniyawala flyover around 7.20am on Monday, following which five people died on the spot. All five of them were allegedly riding the same motorcycle. Dehradun's District Disaster Management Officer Rishab Kumar said that the deceased were identified as Mithilesh and Sadan, both residents of Dehradun's Adarsh Colony. The injured - Shiva, Vikas, and Sumit - were rushed to the Sub-District Hospital in Doiwala for treatment.
In Nainital, a 40-year-old man, Ajay Arya from Ranikhet in Almora district, drowned in Dhokane waterfall on Sunday evening. His body was recovered on Monday morning by SDRF, according to Bhowali Circle Officer Sumit Pandey.
Meanwhile, Uttarkashi district witnessed two serious incidents. A truck carrying 13 Kanwar pilgrims overturned on the Gangotri National Highway near Sonagad in Bhatwari tehsil on Sunday evening, leaving five injured. The injured, all residents of Delhi - Ashish (19), Jitendra (19), Dheeraj (26), Jagannath (24), and Shahid (20) - were admitted to the district hospital in Uttarkashi. In a separate case, a pilgrim drowned in the Gangotri river near Gangnani on Sunday. SDRF teams resumed search operations Monday morning, but as of Monday evening, the body had not been found, said District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain.
The state government reported the closure of 121 roads, including 10 state highways, one national highway, 42 PWD roads, and 68 rural roads (PMGSY), due to landslides and falling boulders.
In Dehradun, persistent rain caused urban flooding and waterlogging in multiple localities including Shiv Vihar Colony, Maheshwari Vihar in Chandrabani, Trimurti Vihar Colony on Turner Road, Singh Nagar, Deepnagar, Premnagar and Brahmolok Enclave....
