Kanpur, Oct. 9 -- Four persons died after the SUV they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a water-filled ditch near the Barouri overbridge on the Kanpur-Prayagraj national highway in Fatehpur district, early on Wednesday morning. According to the police, the accident took place around dawn, when a group of nine people was returning to Prayagraj from a wedding function held at Valmiki Ashram in Kanpur's Motijheel. The vehicle - a Scorpio - is believed to have lost control after one of its tyres burst, causing it to veer off the highway and plunge into a deep roadside trench filled with rainwater. The vehicle reportedly became submerged, and water quickly entered the cabin. Four passengers died of suffocation and drowning on the spot. Upon receiving the alert, local police reached the site and managed to rescue five others from the vehicle. SHO Akhilesh Kumar confirmed the deaths and said that the rescued passengers have been hospitalised. The deceased have been identified as Sahil Gupta 26, Shivam Sahu, 28, Ritesh Sonkar, 28 and Rahul Kesarwani, 25, all residents of the Khuldabad area in Prayagraj. The survivors include the driver, Rahul Kumar, along with Mahesh, Amit, Sumit, and Neeraj.
