Meerut, Nov. 7 -- Muzaffarnagar police on Thursday arrested Abdul Ahad Rana, son of former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Shahnawaz Rana, for allegedly supplying a mobile phone to his father inside Muzaffarnagar district jail. The arrest also brought renewed focus to an earlier case in which both father and son were named in connection with an attack on a GST team during a raid at the Rana Steel Factory. Police said Abdul Ahad was taken into custody around midnight on Wednesday from a wedding ceremony at a banquet hall in Muzaffarnagar city. Superintendent of police (SP) Sanjay Verma confirmed the arrest, stating that it was based on concrete evidence. "Abdul Ahad has been arrested for his involvement in the GST-related offences and for providing a mobile phone to his jailed father," Verma said. The case dates back to December 5, 2024, when a GST team raided the Rana Steel Factory. During the operation, the team was allegedly attacked by a mob. A case was filed against Shahnawaz Rana and 200-300 unidentified persons, following which Shahnawaz was arrested and sent to jail. Three FIRs were later registered. The first, at Civil Lines police station, accused Shahnawaz of GST evasion. The second, also at Civil Lines, concerned the alleged attack on the GST team and named both Shahnawaz and Abdul Ahad. The third was filed under the Gangster Act in connection with the same incident. On March 5, 2025, while lodged in Muzaffarnagar jail, a mobile phone was recovered from Shahnawaz Rana. A fresh case was registered at New Mandi Police Station against Shahnawaz, Abdul Ahad, relative Mohammad Ghazi, servant Aamir and two others. Shahnawaz was subsequently shifted to Chitrakoot jail. On August 24, 2025, the Allahabad High Court granted Shahnawaz bail in all three cases. He has since been residing in Muzaffarnagar. SP Verma said there is substantial evidence indicating Abdul Ahad was involved in the GST evasion network and that he supplied the phone to his father while in custody. The investigation report has been forwarded to police headquarters for further review....
