Forest personnel intensify patrol after tiger kills woman
Rudrapur, April 3 -- Patrolling and efforts has been intensified to capture the tiger suspected of killing a 71-year-old woman in Khatima area of Udham Singh Nagar district on Wednesday, forest personnel of Surai forest range said on Thursday.
Earlier, an elderly man was also killed by a tiger in the same range in January, forest officials said.
Surai forest ranger under Terai-east forest division in Kumaon Rajendra Manral said that forest teams have been deployed to monitor the movement of the tiger in the area. "Our staff has intensified patrolling and monitoring of the problematic tiger. Camera traps have been installed at the spot where the attack took place.
An ex gratia cheque of Rs.3 lakh has also been handed over to the relatives of the deceased," said Manral.
According to forest officials, Gopuli Devi had gone to graze cattle in the nearby forest on Wednesday morning along with other women. A tiger suddenly attacked her and dragged her nearly 30 metres into the forest.
On witnessing the attack, the accompanying women raised an alarm and informed villagers, who subsequently alerted the forest department.
Forest personnel later recovered the woman's body and sent it for post-mortem examination before handing it over to her family members, officials said.
"We had to fire in the air to retrieve the body from the tiger. Villagers have been advised not to venture into the forest to avoid further human-wildlife conflict as the Surai forest range is a tiger-dominated area," Manral added.
Earlier, Sher Singh Kanyal was killed in a tiger attack in the same forest range on January 12. On Tuesday, Kheem Singh Rawat was killed in a tiger attack in Tadam village under Salt block of Almora district....
