Raipur, Aug. 19 -- Security forces have destroyed a Maoist camp in a forested hilly area in Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh and recovered arms, ammunition, cash, and other materials from the spot in a joint operation, police said on Monday. Four Maoists carrying a cumulative reward of Rs. 19 lakh surrendered before the police, with Inspector General of Police, Raipur range, Amresh Mishra calling it an "unprecedented success" for the police force. The joint operation that started on Saturday night involved teams of the Gariaband and Dhamtari police forces, as well as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit in the forests near Bade Gobra village under the Manepur police station limits. During patrolling, the advancing team came under firing from ultras near a Maoist camp. Security forces retaliated, forcing the Maoists to flee the site, leaving behind a large cache of weapons and belongings, the IGP said. "From the spot, security personnel recovered four country-made rifles, four pistols, a hand grenade, a belt-fed machine gun, 17 live rounds of 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm calibre, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 50 electronic detonators, and an INSAS magazine, among other ammunition," Mishra added. They also seized Rs.16.5 lakh in cash, a laptop, radio sets, uniforms, solar equipment, and a large quantity of Maoist literature and other materials, the officer added. Police said the camp has been demolished and further search operations are underway in the Manepur area. "This is an unprecedented success for Gariaband police, this area, and for the state. Four Naxal cadres, who were active for the last decade in this region, have surrendered with their weapons..." the IGP said, adding the surrendered Maoists were later felicitated by the police. Meanwhile, a jawan of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Chhattisgarh police was killed and three other personnel were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists went off in Bijapur district on Monday, police said. The explosion occurred in the morning in Indravati National Park area when a DRG team was out on an anti-LWE operation. DRG jawan Dinesh Nag was killed in the blast and three other personnel suffered injuries, a senior officer said. The injured personnel were administered preliminary treatment and are being evacuated from the forest, the officer said....
