Flood alert sounded in Gaya Ji as many villages inundated
BHABUA, Aug. 24 -- A woman drowned and many people were stranded after flood waters ravaged many villages in Bodh Gaya and Mohanpur blocks in Gaya Ji district late on Friday evening, officials of the district administration said.
The Gaya Ji administration also issued a red alert for following the Jharkhand's meteorology department's forecast about extremely heavy rainfall from Saturday to Monday.
After heavy rainfall in the hilly areas bordering Jharkhand since Thursday night, water level of Muhane river rapidly soared on Friday afternoon. Later, the flood water entered villages like Basadhi, Silaunja, Bataspur, Ghongharia, Chhachh, Ghato and Moratal in Bodh Gaya block, and Baghlati and Gajadharpur villages in Mohanpur block.
According to officials, a young woman Muralula Devi drowned at Gajadharpur village while the administration rescued two villagers stuck in the river near Silaunja village. Two farmers and 10 cattle trapped near Baghalati village in Mohanpur block were also rescued. District magistrate Shashank Subhankar led the nightlong rescue operations.
Knee-deep water has entered houses and people are taking shelter on high places, officials said.
Standing crops have been damaged. Flood water has submerged the main road near Silaunja, disrupting the road connection between Mohanpur and Bodh Gaya. Water also entered in Basadhi PACS godown destroying and damaged 400 sacks of wheat. Traders have suffered heavy losses after water filling in roadside shops. The State Disaster Response Teams (SDRF) teams have been stationed in the affected areas.
Angry villagers blocked the road and demanded to break the Bataspur Dam over Muhane river to release the water pressure. Basadhi panchayat former deputy mukhiya Manoranjan Prasad Samdarshi said that flood water entered the villages and destroyed several houses and crops every year due to the dam which spread the flood waters. He demanded construction of a check dam upstream to the present dam for permanent solution of the disaster.
The DM Shashank Subhankar said that the administration had passed a scheme for expansion of Bataspur dam with estimated cost of Rs.24.21 crores to strengthen the flood protection and irrigation facilities in Basadhi panchayat and surrounding areas. The work will be started after the rainy season and completed before October next year....
