Floating restaurant on Yamuna near Kalighat set for makeover ahead of Magh Mela
PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 12 -- Tourists visiting Prayagraj will soon experience a revamped floating restaurant on the Yamuna near Kalighat, close to the Sangam. As part of the Prayagraj Smart City Mission, a detailed roadmap has been set in motion to upgrade the restaurant's infrastructure and overall appeal, officials said.
Sanjay Rath, project manager of the Prayagraj Smart City Mission, confirmed that the floating restaurant-originally developed under the mission-will undergo a comprehensive makeover. The tender process has already begun, with an investment of over Rs.3 crore allocated for the project.
Under the new plan, the restaurant and eight associated motorboats will be leased for a period of six years, aiming to improve revenue generation and enhance the tourist experience. In addition to aesthetic upgrades, supporting infrastructure will also be added. A kitchen, toilet, and washroom facility will be constructed along the riverbank near Kalighat to support restaurant operations and improve visitor convenience, Rath said.
The floating restaurant, named Kalindi, was initially built at a cost of nearly Rs.5 crore in the run-up to the Mahakumbh 2025. It quickly became a popular attraction, drawing thousands of visitors for its riverside dining and boat rides. However, operations were suspended due to rising water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna. With a suite of new features planned, Kalindi is now set to reopen ahead of the Magh Mela 2026, promising an upgraded experience for pilgrims and tourists alike.
The area dedicated to motorboat activities is also being expanded. A 6.49-km-long boating circuit is being developed, which will connect Kalighat to Quila Ghat (2.57 km), Quila Ghat to Arail Ghat (0.85 km), and Arail Ghat back to Kalighat.
To streamline access and ticketing, two additional ticket counters will be established-one at Quila Ghat and another at VIP Ghat-complementing the existing facility at Kalighat.
Officials believe this ambitious upgrade will significantly enhance the tourism experience in the city, seamlessly blending the spiritual essence of the Sangam with modern amenities on the tranquil waters of the Yamuna....
