Five killed, 10 injured in van-bus collision in Lakhimpur Kheri
Lakhimpur Kheri, Sept. 29 -- Five persons, including the driver and a two-year-old child, travelling in a private van were killed while 10 others were injured, when the vehicle on way to Lakhimpur from Sitapur collided head on with a speeding UP roadways bus at Badi Nahar turn near Oel on Lakhimpur-Sitapur highway under Kheri Town police limits early on Sunday morning.
Seven among injured are reported to be critical while passengers of the roadways bus were reported to be safe.
"There is a dead end on one side of the road and vehicle movement is on the other half of the road, both ways. At this spot a collision took place, where passengers in the van died while passengers on the bus remained unhurt. Six injured have been referred to Lucknow while three are under treatment in Lakhimpur Kheri," said Durga Shakti Nagpal, district magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri.
Van had registration number UP32JS-4961 and registration number of the bus was UP 31T-8792. Kheri Town police said the deceased were identified as van driver Sunil, 25, of Pipariya under sadar kotwali area, Sarafraj, 2, of Dateli, and Budhram, Rama Shankar and one unidentified male. The head-on collision was so intense that the front portion of the van was badly damaged, leaving the driver and one other killed on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the accident took place at around 6.15am at the Badi Nahar turn where traffic of vehicles from Lakhimpur to Sitapur had been diverted to the same lane for Sitapur-Lakhimpur traffic owing to ongoing repair work.
The morning-walkers from Oel town who witnessed the tragic accident attempted to rescue those inside the van.
Kheri Town and its outpost Oel police were intimated following which Kheri Town police station incharge Nirala Tiwari along with his staff rushed the spot.
Police along with locals took out those inside the van and rushed them to district hospital at Motipur, Oel where five were declared dead.
Among the 10 injured, seven namely Sharda, Babli, Salman, Naj, Pushpa, Dilkhush and Shyam Lal were sent to Lucknow after preliminary treatment in view of their critical condition while three others Sarvesh, Sanjay and Bhola Nath were reported to be undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
DM Nagpal alongwith SP Sankalp Sharma visited the district hospital at Motipur, Oel and called on the injured. "We have called family members and will ensure adequate compensation. Also efforts will be made to avoid such incidents," said the DM.
While consoling the grieving families, they instructed the hospital staff to provide best treatment to the injured....
