five key rivers breach danger mark as heavy rain continues
Dehradun, Aug. 7 -- Five key river sites across Uttarakhand were flowing above the danger mark on Wednesday morning as heavy rainfall continued in many parts of the hill state, according to officials.
The Central Water Commission's (CWC) Flood Forecast Monitoring Directorate stated that at least five key river sites in the state remained in a "Severe Flood Situation," a classification issued when water levels lie between the designated danger level and the highest flood level.
In Rudraprayag district, the Alaknanda river was reported in a severe flood state at 6 am, flowing at 627.6 metres - 0.60 metres above the danger mark of 627.0 metres. At Gaurikund, the Mandakini river was at the danger mark of 1976.8 metres, with a steady trend. It remains just 0.55 metres below its previous HFL of 1977.35 metres, also recorded on June 17, 2013.
At Rudraprayag , the river was recorded at 626.3 metres, 0.30 metres above the danger mark, though with a falling trend of -299.99 mm/hour.
In Haridwar district, the Banganga river at Raysi was flowing at 231.69 metres, 0.69 metres above the danger level, as of 6 am. In Rishikesh, the Ganga water level touched the danger mark, prompting police to vacate the river ghats as a precautionary measure....
