Lucknow, Nov. 27 -- Five people from Bahraich were killed and two others sustained injuries after a hatchback car returning from a wedding fell into the Sharda Canal in Lakhimpur Kheri on Tuesday, police said. CM Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the kin of the deceased. The incident took place around 1am near Paras Purwa village on the Dekhera Girijapuri Highway under Padhua police station limits. Initial reports suggest that the car's doors locked automatically as it slipped into the canal, trapping the passengers inside. Villagers woke up on hearing a loud splash, but the vehicle was already sinking when they reached. Local residents informed the police. Villagers with police and a boat tied a rope to the submerged car and pulled it out. When the doors did not open, they broke a window with a brick and rescued the passengers. All seven occupants were taken to CHC Ramiya Behar, where doctors declared five of them dead on arrival. The deceased were identified as Jitendra ,23, Ghanshyam, 25, Lalji,40, Surendra ,50, and Azimullah Ahmad ,49, all from Bahraich. The driver, Babloo ,25, and another passenger survived but remain in critical condition. The driver told police that Jitendra and Ghanshyam were cousins and that, apart from Jitendra, the other four deceased were fourth-grade employees at the Ghaghra Barrage in Bahraich. He said the car was not speeding, but the bridge was very dark. A sudden turn caused the vehicle to skid and fall into the canal....
