Five arrested for cheating, 3 caught after police encounter
Agra, May 22 -- :Agra Police arrested five men in connection with a cheating case, where the victim was tricked into handing over his gold chain and ring. The arrests took place in the early hours of Wednesday, with three of the accused caught after being injured in a police encounter near the Poiyya Ghat area.
The group is reportedly involved in a common form of street fraud known locally as 'tappebaazi', where victims are deceived through conversation and misdirection.
According to the complaint, the victim, a resident of Takshila Colony, was on his morning walk on May 16 when a man on a motorbike stopped him near Ganpati Apartments and asked for an address. Another man soon joined in, and the two began talking about Rs 1 lakh, drawing the victim into their conversation.
Using tricks, the two men convinced the victim to hand over his gold chain and ring. As soon as he did, they ran away. When the victim shouted for help, a third man arrived on a motorbike and pretended to chase the thieves but instead picked them up and all three escaped together. A case was registered at New Agra police station under section 318(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating by dishonestly inducing the victim to give up valuables.
According to deputy commissioner of police (City) Sonam Kumar, police teams were formed to trace the suspects. In the early hours of Wednesday, police received information about their movements near Poiyya Ghat, along the Yamuna River. When officers tried to stop them, the accused opened fire. In retaliation, police fired back in self-defence, injuring three of the suspects in the legs. Three injured accused were identified as Mahendra from Mayur Vihar in Delhi, Manoj Goswami from Shahganj in Agra and Hakeem Goswami from Bhagat Singh Colony in Faridabad (Haryana). Two of their associates namely Kuldeep and Jagdeesh, both from Agra, moved taking benefit of darkness but were arrested later in day, informed DCP city Sonam Kumar. Police recovered illegal arms, a gold chain and two gold rings, cash of Rs 50,080 and two motor cycles....
