Five arrested, stolen jewellery weighing over 2 kg recovered
VARANASI, Jan. 10 -- Five people allegedly involved in the theft of gold jewellery were arrested with the stolen goods from near Kudakhana Benia in Varanasi. The gold jewellery, weighing 2,122.00 grams (over 2 kg), was recovered from their possession on Friday.
The recovered gold jewellery is valued at about Rs 3 crore, police said.
The accused were identified as Deepesh Chauhan, 26, a resident of Jaunpur; Vikas Benvanshi, 27, Shubham Vishwakarma, 27, and Sainuddin Ansari, 25, all residents of different localities of Ghazipur; and Tarak Ghorai, 31. They were arrested from near Kudakhana Benia and Cantt station in Varanasi, said assistant commissioner of police, Dashashwamedh, Atul Anjan Tripathi.
Tripathi detailed the recovered items, stating that they included 20 gold necklaces (small and large), 30 pairs of Kanauti (ear pins), 79 nose rings, 400 rings, 69 small and large Mangalsutra lockets, 11 pairs of Brijbali, and 68 pieces (34 pairs) of Guti Jhumka. These, along with a box, totaled 2,122.00 grams.
Tripathi stated that on January 6, a complaint was filed by a person whose firm's employee had reported a theft involving gold jewellery worth crores of rupees. Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Section 305 (a) BNS at Chauk Police Station.
Tripathi added that a police team led by Chauk Station In-charge Inspector Dilip Kumar Mishra began the investigation, during which CCTV footage around the incident was examined.
The ACP said that acting on a tip-off, the police team arrested the five accused with the stolen goods from near Cantt station.
The accused were produced before the court, from where they were sent to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway, the ACP added....
