Pithoragarh, Nov. 3 -- The state hosted its first high-altitude ultra-run marathon under the shadow of Adi Kailash in Pithoragarh district on Sunday. This marked a milestone for adventure and spiritual tourism in the Himalayan state. The 60-kilometre ultra-marathon, organised to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the state's formation, drew more than 700 participants from 22 states across the country. Officials said the challenging event, held amid the rugged Himalayan terrain and freezing temperatures, showcased participants' remarkable endurance, courage, and fitness. The ultra-run began from the spiritual heritage site of Adi Kailash, said officials. Officials said participants lauded the state government and local administration for seamless organisation and safety arrangements. They also expressed gratitude for the extensive support provided by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Army, who played a crucial role in managing the difficult high-altitude conditions and ensuring the event's success. Officials said locals and runners alike said the region has witnessed a surge in tourism activities since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Adi Kailash. Thousands of spectators gathered along the route to cheer the athletes, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for adventure sports in the region. Senior officials from the tourism department, ITBP, district administration, and police, along with local representatives, were present at the event. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated all participants and organisers, describing the event as "a proud moment for Uttarakhand." "This historic ultra-run, held at a sacred site like Adi Kailash, not only symbolises courage and determination but also sets a new direction for adventure tourism and sports culture in the state's border areas," he said.
